I am from England and have just returned from New York city where I went to see the wonderful art in the Met etc.I coulndnt believe how rude the people are there. Also, if you speak to someone they avoid eye contact and tend to look away as they speak to you. They are loud and abrupt and soo angry. Why are they like this ? It really spolit my trip that there is a culture such as this,it is so sad that people are like this, after all, what is the point of being alive if they are all so bloody miserable.OK so perhaps the majority of New Yorkers are struggling financially but aren't we all that;s no excuse for being so rude to people. If this is the land of the free you can keep it !

Thanks for taking the time to write this helpful post.

I think it's also important, as you work out what you want your ideal life to be like, to take some time to write down WHY it's so important to you to have it. This seems to help increase the motivation, as you basically talk yourself into a sense of obligation to follow your plan through (all the reasons you deserve it; why your kids deserve the happiness it will bring the family, etc).

Keep up the good work. This is such an important question: how to live the good life.

The infomercial it left me feeling depressed. I don't think he actually played to the human emotions that he should have, such as hope. It should have been entitled "The audacity to declare my presidency too early".

Kids are America's most precious and most at-risk citizens. With drugs and peer pressure facing them on a daily basis, it's no wonder that mental illness and drug abuse is at an all time high. Problems facing American children.

I find these questions concerning ethics and morality to play a role in my classroom, especially since I teach in a Christian school. Some of our parents not only come from the 60's, 70's generations of challenging authoritarian structures, but other parents also come from privileged backgrounds, which cause them to have expectations for the school's treatment of their students. The "I tortured the teacher, and I turned out ok" attitude that you describe I know I will even more have to deal with in my husband, who grew up as a teacher-torturer. And put a teacher-torturer and a teacher together in a marriage and try to raise children...?? Hmmm...
I think that everyone does, indeed, understand the teenage desire for rebellion. But I think that some parents feel that by drinking/partying with their kids or giving them very limited boundaries that they are gaining their kids' respect and affection. The idea is, "If I give them boundaries, they're just going to break them later on anyway, so I might as well resign myself to the fact that they're going to drink and have sex as teenagers." I simply don't think that is true. The best way to keep kids from destructive decision making is to build close relationships with them and model appropriate behavior. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with a parent knowing who their teenager's friends are, insisting on meeting parents or expecting their teenager to call them during an evening out.
On an educational level, I think we have learned that a disciplined class doesn't necessarily have to be a straight-line, quiet at all times type of class.

Brian,
I also am planning a budget trip. I'm going to Thailand for a few weeks this winter. My personal motto is to try to travel to cheap (maybe third world) countries. I really enjoy the culture as well as the monetary advantages. I'm sure you can travel fairly cheaply in Italy, but you'll really have to do your research. Have a great trip and congrats.
